Young in the Caribbean
Young in the Caribbean (YitC) is a bi-annual bulletin that has been in existence for over four years; originally it was particularly set up to validate practice, knowledge and policies regarding children and youth in Suriname within a Caribbean context. This was seen as needed as matters in Suriname were usually held against the backdrop of the situation in the Netherlands and, for this reason, usually rated as insufficient if not deficient altogether, thus devaluing almost any ‘home-grown’ effort. YitC also sought to embed Surinamese experience in the region and to build bridges between resource people and their activities. An additional objective was to develop the capacity to run and publish this type of bulleting in Suriname. Young in the Caribbean will now be upgraded to validate the Caribbean experience and knowledge regarding children and youth in the region, to enhance and expand policies and practices benefiting them, and to build bridges among professionals, involve young people and open up and create networks. Young in the Caribbean will from the beginning of 2009 pertinent data from the whole English-reading Caribbean, as well as made relevant for the Netherlands Antilles, Curacao and Aruba and selected information from the French and Spanish speaking regions. ICDI associate Rona Jualla-Ali, living and working in the region, will be responsible for content matters and be supported in this by ICDI staff in the Netherlands. Tabiki Productions, Paramaribo, Suriname, will remain responsible of the production.
