Girl Power Programme, Pakistan
The Girl Power programme is a five-year international project on girl’s and young women's rights, that will be implemented in 10 countries. ICDI will work on the reduction of gender violence, the socio-economic and socio-political empowerment of girls and young women in Liberia, Sierra Leone, Bangladesh, Nepal, Pakistan and Nicaragua, through the cooperation with local NGO’s.
In Pakistan we will be working with Bedari, a girls' and women's rights organisation. Fighting discrimination and violence against women remain core subjects. However, it has expanded its wings to other areas which affect women’s condition in the society. These include education, economic empowerment and formulation of explicit laws and their implementation to safeguard women’s rights.
The Girl power programme will expand Bedari's programmes on the protection of girls against violence. Core elements of the programme will be the establishment of a helpline in the Multan area and the strengthening of CBOs capacity to deal with violence against women and girls. Activities include advococay, awareness campaigns and the training of council level security committees.
Overall, the project has the following three objectives:
- Develop community surveillance systems to ensure the protection of girls at the community level by setting up union council level surveillance committees and opening new and strengthening existing help line(s).
- Promoting accountability of state institutions at National, Provincial, District and sub-district levels to protect girls from violence & discrimination
- Combating gender based discrimination and violence through improved access of girls to secondary education
In the programme ICDI and Bedari will work closely with Plan Pakistan and LHRLA (Karachi) who are also partners in the Girl Power Programme. See www.bedari.org.pk for more info about our partner
