Project:
Girl Power in Nicaragua
The Girl Power programme is a five-year international project on girl’s and young women's rights, that will be implemented in 10 countries. ICDI will work on the reduction of gender violence, the socio-economic and socio-political empowerment of girls and young women in Liberia, Sierra Leone, Bangladesh, Nepal, Pakistan and Nicaragua, through the cooperation with local NGO’s.Girl Power Programme in Nicaragua.
In Nicaragua ICDI will work closely with the local organization Asociacion La Amistad. La Amistad started to work directly with street children, children victims of violence and abuses, children employed as sexual workers in Nicaragua back in 90s. Up to date it is active in the region of Matagalpa, both in the urban area and in the rural communities. Its work focuses mostly on prevention of violence against children and adolescents, through the awareness raising and capacity building of families, communities, educational institutions and children themselves. La Amistad promotes the use of participatory methodologies and non formal education in the implementation of activities on child rights and women’s rights. Moreover, it foresees re-integration programmes for victim of violence and sexual exploitation, offering an individual psychosocial support that often leads the child to become a social worker/peer educator within the organization. Within the Girl Power Programme La Amistad and ICDI will focus on adolescent girls, young women, their families and communities living in 5 rural municipalities of the regions of Matagalpa and RAAN.
The activities that will take place include:
- Awareness raising workshops for girls and boys, families and community leaders;
- Creation of informal girls and women networks Self help groups;
- Training for government officials, public authorities and school teachers on CRC and protection;
- Inter-institutional dialogue sessions mechanisms to support better implementation of policies and laws for protection of women;
- Participatory workshops for girls and boys on new media technologies and child/women rights.
