Project:

Girl Power in Liberia

The Girl Power program is a five-year international project on girl’s and young women's  rights, that will be implemented in 10 countries. ICDI will work on the reduction of gender violence, the socio-economic and socio-political empowerment of girls and young women in Liberia, Sierra Leone, Bangladesh, Nepal, Pakistan and Nicaragua, through the cooperation with local NGO’s.

In Liberia, ICDI works with the local chapter of African Network for the Prevention and Protection against Child Abuse and Neglect (ANPPCAN). ANPPCAN-Liberia is one of the leading organizations in Liberia in the field of child protection. A recent joint small-scale research outlined the main issues faced by Liberian youngsters and prioritized the situation of the teenage girls, victims of sexual abuse who get pregnant and drop out of school. The teenage mothers constitute probably the most vulnerable group of Liberian youth and are in need of immediate support.

Within the Girl Power Program ANPPCAN and ICDI will focus on adolescent girls, and especially on the victims of (sexual) violence to improve their developmental chances. ANPPCAN and ICDI work in Cape Mount and Montserrado Counties. The activities that will take place include:

-Vocational training for teenage mothers who dropped-out of school

-Capacity building of local stakeholders to strengthen parental skills and to support children in executing their rights, including the right to education

- Support for local initiatives and grass-root structures in the field of child protection

- Awareness raising, lobby and advocacy also through activities (e.g. sport ones) and engaging relevant government agencies, to support better implementation of policies and laws on child protection.
