Evaluation of Early Childhood project in Ethiopia

In the period 11 to 14 November ICDI's director Mathijs Euwema visited Ethiopia to evaluate an Early Childhood project by the NGO Education for Sustainable Development (ESD). For the past two years ESD has set up 4 pre-schools in the rural area around Debrebirhan, some 150 kilometres north of the capital Addis Abeba.

Succesvol seminar 'Non formele vrijetijdsbesteding; een weg naar integratie?'

Op 21 Oktober 2010 heeft ICDI, in samenwerking met King for a Day/Diversion (www.diversion.nl), een succesvol seminar georganiseerd rond het thema non-formele vrijetijdsbesteding, en de rol die dit kan vervullen bij de integratie van kinderen en jongeren uit minderheidsculturen in Nederland. Na een inleiding door de directeur van ICDI Mathijs Euwema, volgden interessante lezingen door Nico van Oudenhoven (Senior Associate ICDI), Mimoun Ouled Radi (bekend Nederlands acteur van Marokkaanse afkomst), Renee Witteveen (coordinator sport en onderwijs ontwikkeling stadsdeel West Amsterdam) en Dr. Paul Verweel  (hoogleraar Krajicek Chair Universiteit Utrecht en vice voorzitter Koninlijke Nederlandse Voetbal Bond).

ICDI staff contribute to new book about young children’s peer relationships

A new book titled ‘Peer relationships in Early Childhood Education and Care’ has just been published by Routledge.  It is edited by ICDI programme manager, Margaret Kernan along with Elly Singer, from University of Utrecht and University of Amsterdam. It also includes a chapter written by ICDI programme manager Nina von der Assen.

Non-punitive approaches towards children; ICDI training in Kenya

September 2010 ICDI carried out a Training of Trainers (ToT) on Non-punitive approaches towards children in Nairobi and Kwale, Kenya. Trainees were staff of the Ministry Of Education like District Education Officers (D.E.O), District Quality Assurance Standards Officers (DQASO), Teachers Service Commission (T.S.C.), Guidance and Counseling teachers, Primary school teachers, staff of Children’s Services like Children’s Officers, Head Teachers, Kenya Institute of Special Education (K.I.S.E), several Charitable Children Institutions (C.C.I) and Plan Kwale and Plan Nairobi staff.

Situation of children in Bulgarian institutions

In several Dutch media a lot of attention has been given these past days to a recent action undertaken by the Helsinki Committee based on the assumption that many deaths of disabled children in Bulgarian institutions could have been prevented if the care had been better. Although a lot has improved in child protection services in this country in the past years, also by efforts of the government, it is clear that still a lot still needs to be done. ICDI has been at the forefront of child protection policy development and capacity building in Bulgaria in the past  years.
