Together with the Surinamese organization 'Gezin en Recht' (Family and Justice), ICDI has recently started the training of hundred military personnel in Suriname on non-violent approaches to child rearing. From research it is clear that around 80% percent of children in Suriname experience violence during their upbringing. There is a general tendency amongst parents, teachers and authorities that being harsh is necessary to keep children "on the right track". At the same time adults are often not aware of effective, non-violent ways of approaching children. The training aims to make people aware of alternative, more positive pedagogic styles, as well as show the negative effects of violent methods. Besides military personnel, also policemen, parents and youth care staff will be trained.
